Durham Mighty Pen affirms and amplifies Durham’s young voices through innovative creative writing, publishing, and tutoring programs. We do this because strong critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills – cultivated seamlessly and with unparalleled effectiveness in creative writing contexts – are necessary tools to build community, confidence, and opportunity.
Inspired by 826 National’s model, Durham Mighty Pen partners with local organizations, educators, writers, and artists to promote the educational success of our city’s under-served youth.
Our inaugural program, a middle school short story workshop, kicked off in March of 2015 at the Emily K Center. A book created by student collaboration and published with the support of Durham Mighty Pen collects and commemorates their work.
