Shop local. Eat local. Read local.

Welcome to Read Local where our mission is to celebrate the written word and the area’s full literary “ecosystem.” We bring together local writers, publishers, booksellers, libraries, designers, artists, critics, bloggers – and of course, readers! – to honor our local literary arts scene.

Last year, we gathered during a weekend-long event from May 15-17, 2015 and featured a kick-off Cookbook Rodeo, writing workshops, author dinners, a daytime exhibition in Durham Central Park, children’s activities, local celebrities reading outside their comfort zones, a lightning reading open mic event, and much more.

Going forward, we are organizing smaller events throughout the year and plan to do the street festival every other year.  Our next event will be a Cookbook Rodeo in September 2016 at Parker & Otis.

Sign up to make sure you don’t miss a Read Local event.

What do we mean by local?

Local can mean so many things. For our purposes, we’re defining local as Durham (where we’re located) and all adjoining counties, including Wake, Orange, Chatham, Person, and Granville.

Participants in Read Local each have a connection to one of these counties. That connection can be their place of residence, their publisher, and even where they set their books.
